Scholarship Assistance

Scholarship opportunities are a great way to help minimize student loan debt. In addition to internal scholarships, reach out to your local community to find additional scholarship opportunities.

The following scholarships have been made possible by generous alumni and friends of the School. Applications are open to current students annually in September via the Office of Student Services and Enrollment Management.

Awarded to one incoming dental student annually who is from a systematically underrepresented racial and ethnic background.

Delmer H. Eichler Scholarship Fund

DS1-4

Students demonstrating academic or other merit according to the guidelines established by the Dean, as well as financial need.

Dr. Charles J. Cooper Dental Scholarship

DS1-4

Minority students who have mentored pre-dental applicants and/or participated in recruitment/retention activities for minority students.

Dr. William J. Giovan Memorial Endowed Scholarship

DS1-4,  DH1-2

Students maintaining good academic standing and demonstrating financial need.

E. Ray and Anne E. Stricker Endowed Scholarship

Students who are in good academic standing.

Edward Hoban Memorial Scholarship

DS3, DH2

Students who demonstrate financial need. Third-year dental students or second-year dental hygiene students balancing professional studies and family responsibilities.

Elias Floyd Delta Sigma Delta Scholarship

DS3, DS4

Students belonging to, and in good standing with, Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity who demonstrate a financial need.

Falcon Family Expendable Scholarship

 

DS4, DH2

These funds are to be awarded to students studying in the School of Dentistry, at their graduation awards ceremony. Candidates for these funds must be in good academic standing and are experiencing financial need.

  • Top priority for receipt of these funds will be non-traditional students who have overcome adversity in their lives, particularly during the time of their dental studies. Some examples of life-circumstance-challenges that applicants have overcome could be language or cultural barriers, family member death or illness, etc.
  • This fund will provide monies to graduating DDS and/or DH students. 
  • Recipients are not expected to pay back this financial assistance. However, recipients of the Falcon Family Expendable Scholarship Fund are encouraged to make a contribution to the fund, when they are fiscally able.

George and Ester Jaruga Endowed Scholarship

 DS3-4

Student must be graduates of a Michigan or Pennsylvania high school, demonstrate financial need and have experience as a mentor or have ongoing family responsibilities.

All UDM Dental Students

Up to $2,500 emergency, one-time only scholarship, are awarded to students studying in the School of Dentistry. Candidates for these funds must be in good academic standing and experiencing financial need that has been exacerbated by emergency factors that were altogether unexpected and impossible for which to plan. The candidates are required to provide written certification of the extraordinary need.

J&J Summer Enrichment Program

 

Preference given to Michigan residents (must be US Citizen); Must be a student of underrepresented minority group(s) in the field of dentistry -- individuals who identify as Black/African-American, American Indian/Native American/Alaska Native, Latino/Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and/or belonging to certain Asian subpopulations (other than Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Asian Indian, or Thai); Awarded to a dental student who demonstrates leadership skills, a commitment to community services and dedication to dentistry.

James Sarcheck, D.D.S. Endowment

 

The James Sarcheck, D.D.S Endowment provides financial assistance for a dental student presentation of clinically relevant findings at national peer-reviewed meetings.

Jeeva Family Expendable Scholarship

DS1

First year dental students maintaining good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.

Kathleen and Donald Vanitvelt Endowed Scholarship

 

DS3-4

The student must be a Michigan resident, in good academic standing with a minimum 3.25 GPA and demonstrate financial need.

Kinra Family Endowed Scholarship

DS3-4

Students who are in good academic standing and show an interest in endodontics.

Larry Charles Anderson, Ph.D., Endowed Scholarship

All UDM Dental Students

Candidates for these emergency funds must be in good academic standing and experiencing financial need that has been exacerbated by emergency factors that were altogether unexpected and impossible for which to plan. The candidates are required to provide written certification of the extraordinary need.

Lawrence Cotman Expendable Scholarship

Students who have a GPA of 3.5 and demonstrate financial need.

Michael J. Frenchi Endowed Scholarship

DS2  


Be a student in good academic standing, actively involved in academic as well as extra-curricular activities, distinguish themselves by good works and acts of support for his/her classmates and the school in general. 

Candidates must provide an essay of up to 500 words listing the qualities that they possess making them eligible for the Michael J. Frenchi Endowed Scholarship Fund. The essay should reflect the ideals of respect, selflessness, and integrity.

Michael J. Kratochwill, D.D.S. Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

Student must be a Michigan resident, in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.

Mosely Dental Scholarship

DS1-4

Dental student must be of African American descent demonstrating financial need. 

National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA) Endowed Scholarship

 

DS1-4

Dental student must be of Arab American descent, in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.

Sherry A. Castle-Boyer Endowed Scholarship for Dental Hygiene

DH1-2, DH degree-completion

Student must be in good academic standing and exhibit some or all of the following:
  • Demonstrate significant initiative to go above and beyond the provision of excellent oral hygiene care
  • Building upon dental hygiene skills and experiences
  • A broad vision for improving the lives of others through the implementation of original ideas and programs

William J. Nicholson Memorial Endowed Scholarship

DS3-DS4

Students must be graduates of a Michigan high school, have lived in Michigan for at least 10 years and be U.S. citizens. Students must be in good academic standing and represent the greatest demonstrated, unmet financial need, with a strong preference for those who have received the least scholarship or other financial aid.

    Armed Forces

    Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships  (HPSP)

    The U.S. Armed Forces offer scholarships to dental students that pay tuition, fees, books and a monthly stipend. All are highly competitive programs. The active duty obligation is one year of service for each year of scholarship support with a minimum of three years of active duty service. Scholarships are available annually from all service branches. For information, contact the individual branches of service.

    Federally Funded Scholarships

    National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program

    Dental students may compete for NHSC scholarships beginning in their sophomore and junior years. The program offers payment of tuition and fees, books, supplies, and equipment and includes a monthly stipend. In exchange, recipients must agree to provide oral health services for a minimum of two years in any underserved community identified by the NHSC as being a critical need area.     Financial Aid For Minority Students

    In addition to the usual sources of financial aid, there are grants or scholarships which have been established to assist underrepresented minority dental students.  For more information, please contact the UDMSOD Office of Diversity and Inclusion at 313-494-6957.

    Minority Dental Student Scholarship

    Students awarded funds under this program may receive up to $2,500 for their second year. Up to 25 awards are made annually. Applications must be obtained from and submitted at UDMSOD. Additional information for application eligibility may be obtained through the American Dental Association

    *Applications and all supporting documentation must be postmarked no later than June 1. Notification of funding decisions will be made after December 31.

    National Institute Of Dental And Craniofacial Research (Nidcr) Short-Term Training Awards

    This program provides underrepresented minority and women dental students an opportunity to obtain research experience during their professional training. Recipients receive a monthly stipend during training periods. Applicants must be enrolled at a U.S. dental school and be a U.S. citizen, a non-citizen national of the U.S., or lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
